Credit Union ONE signs agreement with Mexican Consulate

(L to R) Credit Union ONE President/CEO Gary Moody signs
agreement with Consul of Mexico Vicente Sanchez-Ventura
Ferndale, Michigan – Credit Union ONE and the Consulate of Mexico in Detroit have partnered to provide educational events related to financial literacy in the local Hispanic community.

The partnership was formalized by signing an agreement, but is part of an on-going collaboration between the credit union and Mexican government to benefit of the community.

“Mexican citizens who have strong family ties to the community regularly move between the U.S. and Mexico to follow work. It is critical they understand how to establish account relationships to make deposits, save, budget, and in many cases move funds to relatives in Mexico. This is about providing resources to this community so that they can make safe, secure, and low cost financial choices that will best serve their needs,” said Gary Moody, President and CEO of Credit Union ONE.

Credit Union ONE is among a small group of credit unions that accept the Matricula Consular de Mexico card as identification to open an account. Credit Union ONE hopes acceptance of this card, and its deeper partnership with the Mexican government to provide financial literacy will open up more opportunities for members in the Southwest Detroit area.

Document shredding day a success at Credit Union ONE

Credit Union ONE member Paul Jaboro participated in the Document
Shred Day held at the Sterling Heights Branch of Credit Union ONE
Ferndale, Michigan – When important information gets into the wrong hands it can be devastating for those affected.

In an effort to help their members and the community at large, Credit Union ONE recently held a document shredding day at their Sterling Heights Branch location. Over 100 people turned out on Saturday, May 18, 2013 to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud by shredding more than 4,000 pounds of confidential personal and business documents.

Documents containing information such as social security numbers, addresses, account information, financial records or personal data, can be stolen and used to open lines of credit, use existing credit cards or to falsify personal information. Shredding documents that contain private information can protect individuals and businesses from fraudulent use of confidential data.

Along with the shredding, members also had the opportunity to donate to the Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak Children's Hospital through the Children's Miracle Network. Approximately $150 was collected for the hospital.

“Every year Credit Union ONE provides this valuable service for our members as safe and convenient way to dispose of unneeded paperwork," said John Kozich, Executive Director of Community Relations for Credit Union ONE.

Working closely with Shred Corp., the industry-leading company that donated their time and equipment to provide secure on-site shredding services, Credit Union ONE coordinated the three-hour event for their members. The shredded paper waste collected was taken away for recycling into paper towel.

"This is an awesome way to to help and remove important papers, and I am happy my credit union has this service available for members," said Credit Union ONE member Paul Jaboro.
