Tons Shredded at Credit Union ONE Macomb Branch

Credit Union ONE members (L) Kathleen Hamel and (R) Katheline
Clark were thankful for the shredding opportunity
Ferndale, Michigan – Approximately 300 people turned out at the Credit Union ONE Macomb Branch on Saturday, May 19, 2012 to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud by shredding more than three tons of confidential personal and business documents.

Important information, such as social security numbers, addresses, account information, financial records or personal data, can be stolen and used to open lines of credit, use existing credit cards or to falsify personal information. Shredding documents that contain private information can protect individuals and businesses from fraudulent use of confidential data.

“Every year several million people are victims of identity theft. The shredding event was created to raise awareness about the risks of identity theft and fraud, and to provide a safe and convenient way to dispose of unneeded paperwork," said John Kozich, Executive Director of Community Relations for Credit Union ONE. "Shred Day events are becoming ever more popular as consumers are becoming aware of the dangers of fraud and ID theft, and Credit Union ONE has plans to continue offering this service at various Credit Union ONE branches throughout the year.”

Kozich coordinated the three hour event, working closely with Shred Corp., the industry-leading company that donated their time and equipment to provide secure onsite shredding services.

After the event, the shredded paper waste was taken away for recycling into paper towel.

Credit Union ONE sees record returns using Just File It!

Ferndale, Michigan – Participating in Just file it! We’ll Help, a free State and Federal tax preparation service has proved very valuable to Credit Union ONE members.

This year Credit Union ONE hit a record in terms of number of members using this service and the amount of returns that were generated, almost doubling in each of these categories!

Approximately 618 individuals and families filed their taxes through the program this year, and $955,944 has been returned to these members in State and Federal returns, with $66,127 in Earned Income Credit.

More than 100 Michigan credit unions promoted Just file it! to their membership, and Credit Union ONE came in second both in number of returns and total dollars of returns received.

The Just file it! program is a web-based program that allows families and individuals to file for state and federal tax credits that often go overlooked. The program uses a free, secure web-based software program, posing questions to users and offering assistance via online chats. It is offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. With many Michigan residents struggling to make ends meet, a little extra cash can make a big difference!

“The need for a program like Just File It! is greater than ever,” said Gary Moody, President/CEO of Credit Union ONE. “Credit Union ONE is proud to have joined in the network of credit unions and other nonprofits that offered Just file it! to help families put food on the table, move into better housing, invest in education or save for the future.”
