Credit Union ONE Hosts Community Shred Day

Shred Day Participant Tiffany Netter-Henderson
Ferndale, Michigan – Credit Union ONE hosted a “Shred Day” at its’ Westland Branch on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Although it was cold and rainy, over a hundred people turned out to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud by shredding more than two tons of confidential personal and business documents.

Important information, such as social security numbers, addresses, account information, financial records or personal data, can be stolen and used to open lines of credit, charge existing credit cards or falsify personal information. Shredding documents that contain private information can protect individuals and businesses from fraudulent use of confidential data.

"The shredding event was created to raise awareness about the risks of identity theft and fraud, and to provide a safe and convenient way to dispose of unneeded paperwork," said John Kozich, Executive Director of Community Relations for Credit Union ONE. "Every year several million people are victims of identity theft and our goal is to help the community not be part of those statistics."

The three hour event was coordinated with Shred Corp., the industry-leading company that donated their time and equipment to provide secure onsite shredding services.

After the event, the shredded paper waste was taken away for recycling into paper towel. Upcoming Shred Day events are scheduled for other Credit Union ONE branches later in the year.

It’s all “Greek” to Credit Union ONE

Silvanah Gagnon, President of Oakland University Gamma Phi Beta Sorority
proudly receives $250 check for her organization
Ferndale, Michigan – To many college students their participation in fraternities and sororities is a very important part of their college life.

Credit Union ONE realizes this, and in an effort to engage these students as well as to help contribute to their causes, ran a special giveaway on the Credit Union ONE Oakland University Facebook page called the Greek “Like” Giveaway.

During the month of March, members and friends had the opportunity to vote for their favorite Oakland University greek organization by liking the Credit Union ONE Campus Branch page on Facebook and posting the name of their favorite organization on the page. Anyone opening an account at the Credit Union ONE Campus Branch could also receive an additional 50 votes for the organization of their choice. The votes were tallied and the organization with the most votes won a $250 donation to their national philanthropy, with the second most votes winning a $125 donation to their national philanthropy from Credit Union ONE. Organizations were encouraged to spread the word to their families and friends to boost their vote total.

Fifteen organizations at the university participated and 1,392 votes were received on the Facebook page.  Besides the significant number of votes received, approximately 600 comments were received on the page, and the fan base increased by 470 fans, a 63% increase.

The voting was fierce, but in the end it was Gamma Phi Beta that won the competition with 670 votes, and Phi Sigma Sigma coming in second with 294 votes.
“Our chapter was ecstatic when we heard the news that we won the Credit Union ONE Greek “Like” Giveaway,” said Silvanah Gagnon, President of the Delta Omega Chapter of Gammi Phi Beta Sorority. “We thank Credit Union ONE for their donation and will proudly be presenting the $250 check that we received to our national charity, Camp Fire USA.”

When asked about the promotion, Swami Seetharaman, Chief Marketing Officer of Credit Union ONE said, “This promotion was a win-win for everyone.” “For Credit Union ONE, it brought in new fans as well as engaging the current fans of the Credit Union ONE Oakland University Facebook page. It also gave more visibility to our Oakland University Campus Branch. For our student members, we were able to give back to them and show them that their causes are important to Credit Union ONE.”

People “Like” Random Acts of Kindness

Happy Random Acts of Kindness gift card winner Sharon Ouellette
Ferndale, Michigan – Credit Union ONE recently wrapped up their Random Acts of Kindness Giveaway on Facebook, and to say the least it was a tremendous success.

“Random Acts of Kindness” was a promotion for fans of Credit Union ONE to randomly be selected to win a gift card ranging in value from $5 up to $50. The promotion began on February 27th and ran through March 30th. Each week during the promotion, fans were randomly selected to win gift cards, for a grand total of 17 winners over the five week promotion.

Winners selected were awarded gift cards to Starbucks, Kroger and Meijer grocery stores, with the grand prize winner receiving a $50 gift card.

Initially, analytics showed an amazing jump in Facebook fans from 459 to 1,854 in the first week, and when the promotion ended that number had increased to over 2,300 fans.

Current fans were encouraged to enter into the “Random Acts” drawing, while members of Credit Union ONE received an email asking them to “Like” us on Facebook and enter into the drawing.

“Our goal was to increase the number of engaged fans on our site, and this is exactly what happened,” said Swami Seetharaman, Chief Marketing Officer of Credit Union ONE. “Not only did it increase our fan base, but it also created a lot of positive buzz on the site. Everyone loves it when they have an opportunity to win something and are asked for nothing in return.”
