Document Shred Day Welcomed at Traverse City Credit Union ONE Branch

Traverse City Members braved the rains and happily shredded
their unneeded documents

Ferndale, Michigan – Credit Union ONE hosted a “Shred Day” at its’ Traverse City Branch on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Although it was cold and rainy, approximately 75 people turned out to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud by shredding more than 1 1/2 tons of confidential personal and business documents.

Important information, such as social security numbers, addresses, account information, financial records or personal data, can be stolen and used to open lines of credit, charge existing credit cards or falsify personal information. Shredding documents that contain private information can protect individuals and businesses from fraudulent use of confidential data.

"The shredding event was created to raise awareness about the risks of identity theft and fraud, and to provide a safe and convenient way to dispose of unneeded paperwork," said Tamara DePonio, Credit Union ONE Traverse City Branch Manager.  "Our goal is to help the community rid themselves of unnecessary paperwork, making them less at risk and to also give them a chance to recycle at the same time."

The three hour event was coordinated with ProFILE, an industry-leading company that donated their time and equipment to provide secure on-site shredding services.

After the event, the shredded paper waste was taken away for recycling.  When you look at the recycling value, this shred day saved 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water,  3 cubic yards of landfill, 60 cubic yards of air pollution and 79 gallons of oil.

Other document shred days are being planned for other Credit Union ONE branches next year.
