Credit Union ONE sponsors Oncology Nurse Mentorship Program at Karmanos Cancer Institute

For the seventh year, Credit Union ONE in partnership with the Detroit Public Schools and the United Way for Southeast Michigan, has sponsored the Oncology Nurse Mentorship Program at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

Each year approximately six applicants from Detroit public or charter high schools are selected to participate in the program based upon the successful completion of the application packet and the quality of an essay that they must write.

According to Kelly Brittain, Ph.D., Karmanos’ director of Patient Community Education and Support Services, the mentees complete a six week summertime program to familiarize them with oncology nursing.  The paid internship provides exposure to all aspects of oncology nursing at the hospital, job shadowing and presentations by oncology nurses.  Students learn about the history of nursing, basic cancer information and are taught fundamental nursing skills.  Mentees are assigned a mentor to meet with on a regular basis to learn about oncology nursing from a more personal exposure.

With the support of Credit Union ONE, the goal of the program, to get students interested in oncology nursing and cancer health care is being met.

“Credit Union ONE is proud to have sponsored this program for the last seven years and is excited to see the promise of these young individuals as they prepare to enter into their future,” said Gary Moody, Credit Union ONE President and CEO.

“This year five students completed the program successfully.  Congratulations to:  Sherie Barnes, a senior from Michigan Health Academy; Maknuna Ferdous, a junior from Cass Technical High School; Anesha Hamlin, a junior from Cass Technical High School; Syeda Jahan, a junior from Pershing High School; and Minhazur Rahman, a senior from Cass Technical High School.”
