Ferndale, Michigan – Credit Union ONE joined the efforts of the Latino Press Foundation this holiday season to help those in need in the local Detroit communities.

On Saturday, December 17, 2011 the annual Food Boxes Project, coordinated by the Latino Press Foundation brought together approximately 80 community partners who donated to the campaign this year. Over 150 low-income families benefited from the campaign, receiving food baskets to help them through what is typically a difficult time of the year.

“Detroit is fortunate to have organizations such as the Latino Press Foundation, which strives to keep the sense of “community” alive within the city by helping those who may need some assistance,” said John Kozich, Credit Union ONE Executive Director of Community Relations. “Credit Union ONE appreciates the opportunity to help with this worthy cause.”

“I would like to thank Credit Union ONE for their support of the Latino Press 2011 Food Boxes Project,” said Elias Gutierrez, Publisher of Latino Press. The project helps to distribute food boxes to needy families in Wayne and Oakland Counties, as the economic situation has taught us to care for our brothers/sisters in need. We know that hundreds of families are in need, and without sponsors like Credit Union ONE this wouldn’t be possible. Our satisfaction is that when we are united with our families at Christmas dinner, a lot of families that we support will also have their dinner.”

The Credit Union Difference presented by Credit Union ONE

(L to R) Rosa Gutierrez-Academy of the Americas, Carl King-
Academy of the Americas, and Mariza Sanchez-Credit Union ONE

Ferndale, Michigan – When given the opportunity to talk about the differences between banks and credit unions, John Kozich, Executive Director of Community Relations for Credit Union ONE, jumps at the chance.

“I look forward to telling the credit union story, and letting people know what a benefit credit unions are,” said Mr. Kozich. “When people learn what credit unions are all about, what products and services are available, and how they can save money by belonging to a credit union, there is almost no reason not to join.”

This was the case when Credit Union ONE was contacted by Academy of the Americas, an elementary school located in the southwest area of Detroit, to come in and speak with their parent group about finances.

Mariza Sanchez, Member Sales Consultant at Credit Union ONE spoke to the group about the basics of finance (both in English and Spanish), distributed informational brochures and fielded questions.

“We really appreciate Credit Union ONE taking the time to come to our school and educate our parents about finances and the services they offer,” said Carl A. King, LSCO Vice President, Academy of the Americas. “We are looking forward to having them back again.”

Plans are currently underway for Credit Union ONE to conduct an educational session on basic financial information for children with some of the students at the Academy of the Americas. This is a great opportunity to start them off right in the banking world.

Charitable Giving Efforts Underway at Credit Union ONE

Ferndale, Michigan – The winter season is especially hard for families struggling to make ends meet. In an effort to assist those in the communities we serve, Credit Union ONE is once again participating in collection efforts for a few different organizations.

This year, the organizations that Credit Union ONE will be supporting through donations from its employees and members include Toys for Tots, Forgotten Harvest and Children’s Miracle Network.

Toys for Tots collection boxes will be available at all Credit Union ONE branch locations until December 15th for those wishing to contribute new, unwrapped toys.

Forgotten Harvest Holiday Food Drive will also have containers at all Metro Detroit Credit Union ONE branches to collect non-perishable food items, with much of the collection this year going to help the Salvation Army with their food needs. Food donations will be accepted until December 19th.

To support Children’s Miracle Network, holiday cut-outs are available for purchase at select Credit Union ONE locations throughout the month of December.

“Credit unions at their core are about people helping people,” said Gary Moody, President and CEO of Credit Union ONE. “Typically we are about providing credit and a safe place to save. Throughout the year we engage in many community and charitable activities, but at this time of year we go all out to live the people helping people philosophy and provide for those less fortunate and in need. Each toy, can of food and dollar donated by employees and our members have a direct and tangible positive impact on our communities.”

Anyone interested in donating to one of these causes may visit any Credit Union ONE branch to make their contribution.
